Fast & Furious Friday - CARBON vs TITANIUM RACE BIKE

Bike Image

Recently I had the opportunity to test ride 3 different bikes - the 2011 Fuji SL1 Pro LE (Ultegra), the 2011 Felt F5 (Ultegra), and the Lynskey Helix (Ultegra).  The order I rode them was the Felt, Fuji, and then the Lynskey.  I rode them home from the shop on Saturday evening, did a test ride on Sundays in the southtowns, and then with the Felt and Fuji I got to ride them again Monday night at the shop group ride.

I want to begin this "review" by stating that I am not a racer and I did not test them in that type of setting.  I am also a little heavier than most that "race" bikes at 180 pounds but I just love to ride bikes and have never, before these rides, been on a carbon or titanium frame bike.  I have 3 steel road bike frames and have no problem with that frame material at all.  I felt that to be the best salesman for Tom, and also because someone requested a review of the two frame materials, I should ride these frames so that when people asked questions I would have something to base my opinion on.

The Felt rode great and even though it was "only" equipped with 105 components I had no issues shifting or braking and felt very comfortable on it from the beginning.  I have Felt envy for some reason and sometimes I wonder if that effects my thinking but I have always felt comfortable on both my SS Cross Breed and Elite Nine Mountain Bike and if I ever purchase a TT/Tri bike I am hoping Felts work for my body type.  I can't explain my logic but it is what it is and I was very happy with the F5.  That being said if I was going to go with the Felt I would upgrade to the F3 and get Ultegra.
Tom's Pro Bike Price of bike as ridden: $1,999.00 (SALE PRICE) (MSRP $2,099.00)

The Fuji was my first venture into Ultegra level components.  I have ridden Campagnola before but it was old school down tube shifters long before index shifting came into being.  The Fuji was also a great riding bike and besides some issues with the spoke nipples coming lose I was very pleased with this bike.
Tom's Pro Bike Price of bike as ridden: $2,000.00 (SALE PRICE) (MSRP $2,999.00)

The Lynskey was hands down my favorite bike even though I did not get as many miles in on it as I was hoping for.  Maybe it was a better wheelset but the downhill portion of the ride I did on it with my buddy that has about 50 pounds on me I coasted right beside him and that never happens.  The bike was very responsive and shifted like a charm (Ultegra will do that for you).  MSRP (FRAME ONLY): $2,995.00

My thoughts:  When I went back to my Steel Gunnar Crosshairs the first thing I noticed was that I felt every bump in the road.  To me the Carbon absorbed so much more and the Titanium had a carbon fork on it and I believe that helped quite a bit as well.  My steel bike is heavier than the others but as I put out up above I could stand to drop a couple of pounds before I became concerned about my bike's weight!  In the end, I feel that for a heavier rider that Titanium is a great way to go and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Steel frame either.  I am not saying a heavier ride cannot ride Carbon because that is not true - I just feel that if you have the ability to pay for the Titanium frame and are a larger person then that is a solid way to go.  Carbon was so comfortable and I really enjoyed riding the two frames.  I cannot wait to test a Specialized as well just to see if I can notice a difference.  At the end of the day if you chose a bike with either one you will not be disappointed.  Just go out and ride!

Others thoughts:  This link gave me a lot of insight into the frame composition before I even test rode them.  It even covers Steel and Aluminum as well.  Some very good reading here if this subject interests you.

For more information on any of these bikes or our other selections of race bikes stop by the shop!

Travel By Bike Thursday - PANNIERS

Stephen Lord and his bike

Today we are going to discuss how to carry touring or commuting gear on your bike and not on your body.  The simplest way to do this is to have a rack compatible bike, install a front and rear rack, purchase panniers for said racks, and pack away.

There are many options out there today for panniers and racks and I am going to attempt to give you some things to look for when you decide to have us order some in for you.

Waterproof Panniers:  This is the best way to go because if you are on a tour of any type of length you are more than likely going to hit some wet weather and keeping your clothes and gear dry is very important.  When my buddy and I did our Underground Railroad tour his panniers were not waterproof so he had to wrap all of his important gear in bags and then load them.  I have read that condensation can be a problem doing this but it never seemed to be an issue for him over the course of our tour.

I chose waterproof panniers long before our tour was scheduled for commuting since I didn't want my work clothes to get wet.  Nothing like having to wear wet clothing all day long at work so I felt this was the best choice for me.  On the Underground Railroad rain really was not an issue but last summer when I went out west and did the Pacific Coast Tour rain was a daily issue and having my stuff stay dry was imperative since the highs at times were in the 50s and staying warm was top priority for me.

Top Load vs Side Load:  This is where I think opinions vary the most when it comes to panniers and the ease of using them.  Once again the rear panniers I purchased were for work commuting and I had them before our tour ever became reality.  As much as I like their waterproof ability they are top loaders and for a long tour finding something can become a pain to be honest with you.  For work it is not an issue because I don't open them until I get changed at work but on the tour I had to make sure I kept important stuff towards the top so I could find them easy while traveling.

Side Load panniers give you so many more options to access your gear when it is needed while touring.  You have many different compartments and can store more items as well - something that is quite handy when you are on a self-supported tour.

At the end of the day there are many different options for panniers and many different manufacturers.  If you have more questions about them or know what you are looking to order stop by the shop and let's talk.  If you have never done a bike tour you are truly missing out on a great opportunity to see some beautiful areas of the world and to challenge yourself.  I will tell you this there are some low points when you commit to spending 30 days on the bike but when I look back at photos and remember some of the people we met I don't ever regret doing the tours - I just wish I could do one annually because they are truly inspiring!  But for now I will just ride my bike.

Change It Up Wednesday - BIKE INDUSTRY NEWS

As posted on Facebook yesterday - TEAM KITS are in and if you pre-ordered one stop by the shop and pick it up.  If you are looking to purchase some team gear stop by and check out our overstock.  I will be wearing mine tonight at Sprague Brook for the Mountain Bike Race Series and Chris will be downtown tomorrow night racing in the Thursday Night Crit Series in his kit.

In other Shop news how many of you know that Tom's Pro Bike is really open 24/7??  We have a vending machine out front of the shop with repair parts and are looking for your suggestions on what we could add to make it more beneficial to our customers when our shop is not "open" for you to visit with us?  This is a photo off of the internet because last night was a little damp to take some pictures.  If you have a suggestion to include something specific send us an e-mail, stop by, comment to this post, or give us a call.

The Specialized Enduro SX is a limited-edition gated-racing frameset

For those downhill racers in our readership Specialized is introducing a limited edition Enduro SX.  Only 100 were being offered so availability might be hard to come by and they only made size S and L.

We mentioned that Specialized broke news on a Wind Tunnel at their California facility and it seems Giant wants a challenge between their Propel SL Advanced and the S-Works Venge to see which bike was more aero.

SRAM released details of their disc road brakes earlier this week

It seems as though the UCI is contemplating allowing hydraulic disc brakes into the peleton once they can see some performance data from the manufactures.

Monday our blog was about the Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp.  We also want to remind you that the WNYMBA Wednesday Night Race Series is in full swing now at Sprague Brook and I plan on being there this week now that track season is over!

Tuesday we highlighted one of the entry level TT/Triathlon bikes that is part of our Beginners Package Deal going on all of May the Felt S32.

Wednesday we highlighted some cool industry news with the release of the Specialized Mark Cavendish S-Works.  These are already in short supply so if you are interested in obtaining one you need to contact us IMMEDIATELY!

Thursday we discussed using one of our most popular models as a commuter/touring bike - the Specialized Sectur.  It is not your prototypical "touring/commuter" rig but has the ability to carry a rear rack and fenders and is a great bike at a very reasonable price!

While this is not your "typical" touring/commuting bike - the Specialized Sectur Sport Compact has the ability to have a rear rack attached to it to carry your panniers.  Typically it is not an important commuter feature for me to have racking ability, but when the summer time heat and humidity hit not having a backpack strapped to me is something I don't ever complain about.  The great thing about the Sectur is that you can use it for commuting/touring and also recreational riding and even racing if you are not worried about have a top end carbon fiber race bike.  This is probably one of best selling models to customers that are looking at getting back into bike riding because we all know at one point of our life all we did was ride our bikes!
