Winter Commuting - Don't Stop Riding Because It Is Cold Out!

I came across this cool article yesterday from QBP about Winter Commuting and posted it to Facebook but figured a good old fashioned blog post would be nice in case you missed it.  Here are a couple of key points I took away from it:

Apparel is the hardest thing to nail down - hands down the most difficult aspect of winter riding.  If it is cold out and you leave the house comfortable you are going to sweat out yourself and that is very dangerous!  Leave the house cold!

Visibility and safety are huge concerns when we have so few hours of light - you need lights to see and to be seen!

Commuting isn’t racing - I will do some intervals on the way home generally if I have the legs for it but my ride into the office is at a very casual pace.  This is where base mileage building comes into play!

Stop by today from 10-8 and check out our complete inventory of Bikes, Power Accessories, Tour the Race Room, and start putting your Gift List together! Talk with Tom about your current fit and what your goals for 2016 and beyond are!

Cervelo S5 Reviewed

Are you in the market for a new Aerodynamic Road Bike?  Check out a Review on the Cervelo S5:

By the numbers, the Cervélo S5 was the most aerodynamic aero road bike that we tested in the wind tunnel this summer. Chalk it up to smart design based, in part, on rider feedback. On the road, the S5 just felt fast. Everything about it screams straight-line speed, from the tube shapes to the BBright bottom bracket. The only bike that felt faster was the Time Skylon, which we also tested this year, but the lab data shows that the Cervélo was actually faster.

Increasing Flexibility to Improve Cycling

4 Stretches for Cyclists to Increase Flexibility

I found another very informative article on another way to help improve your cycling this off-season - Improved Flexibility and 4 Stretches for Cyclists to Improve Flexibility:

For many cyclists, this is the time of year when past performances are evaluated, new goals are set, and plans are created to achieve those goals. If one of your goals for next season is to work towards faster bike splits, consider adding some simple stretches to your training routine. Flexibility is key for an aggressive bike position. While it’s not the only factor, it can be a significant obstacle for athletes who want to achieve a more aggressive riding position on the bike.
Targeting your hips, glutes, and hamstrings can help athletes improve flexibility and range of motion in an aggressive position. Below are four challenging stretches that will target the hips, glutes, calves, and hamstrings. As you begin to progress towards greater flexibility in these muscle groups, talk with your coach or bike fitter about how your position on the bike can be improved.

You have to love an article that points to ways to improve your cycling that does not cost any additional money to help.  The key is once you improve your flexibility to ensure that the fit you have for the bike is still the correct one.  You might be able to change your current fit to help you achieve a more aggressive position if that is your desire.

Stop by today from 10-8 and check out our complete inventory of Bikes, Power Accessories, Tour the Race Room, and start putting your Gift List together!  Talk with Tom about your current fit and what your goals for 2016 and beyond are!

Cycling Tires

IMG_5554

Tom posted a link the other day from VeloNews about what is the best rolling tire and it was an extremely interesting article.  HERE IS THE LINK

Here are some cut outs to the things that interested me the most:

Compound is paramount - Rubber compounding is the inexact science of mixing together different organic polymers and, often, inorganic compounds. Tire companies tend to hold their proprietary formulas as closely guarded secrets.
Supple casings reduce rolling resistance but cannot make up for bad compounds - All tires have multiple layers of threads holding things together. Two sheets of unidirectional threads laid across each other at right angles generally counts as one layer. Tire casings are specified in TPI (threads per inch) per sheet. The higher the number, the thinner the threads, since more of them can be crowded together.
AtomTurbo-PSI-test-road(1)
Check out how tire pressure effects the rolling resistance.  It would be great if we all rode on pure track surface but that is not the case in Western New York.  You need to experiment with different pressures and find what is your best pressure.
Wider tires are faster - Tire rolling resistance comes from internal friction within materials (energy loss due to hysteresis) and small bumps that lift the bike and rider.
When it comes to internal friction, wider tires have shorter contact patches and, thus, less deflection. If pressure is the same, the area of the contact patch must be the same to support the same load. (Since both load and pounds per square inch remain constant, the area in contact with the road will also be the same.) But a wider, shorter contact patch will have less vertical depth of deflection, So internal friction and hysteresis loss will be lower.
If a wider tire is constructed of the same materials in the same thicknesses as a narrower one, it will often roll faster on a rough surface, despite being heavier. This is due to both lower internal friction and the fact that the wider tire will better absorb imperfections in the road, thus lifting the bike and rider slightly less on each little impact.

Great Article On Habits of Fast Cyclists

First off - Man I sure hope you got out for a ride yesterday!  What a beautiful day for Mid-November (a bit windy but the temps were ideal!).  I caught a ride out to Arcade and did some exploring out that way on roads I don't ever get to ride on - what a great area if you have not been out there before!

Now onto the blog - browsing the internet I came across this article from Bicycling - 8 Habits Fast Cyclists Swear By:  Here is a piece from the article on Growing Your Base:

Grow Your Base
Getting faster isn't all about intervals and high intensity training, especially if you’re new to cycling. While interval training is important (we'll get into that next), don't forget the value of endurance. Your best bet is to spend a significant amount of time growing your aerobic base—your ability to ride hours at a time. Use the early season and the tail end of the off-season to focus on these endurance rides so you're ready for high intensity training as your season starts.

Surly Pugs SS

Why not continue bragging on Surly???  Today it is a Single Speed Snow Machine - The Surly Pugs SS:

If you’ve ever ridden a singlespeed you probably remember it being the most fun you’ve had on a bike but you may have found it odd how little you thought about the bike while you were riding. It was just you, hauling ass down the trail. It was just you pedaling for all you were worth. There was no noise… no clunky. There was only speed, one speed, only fun. There really isn’t a better frame to give the single speed treatment to than the Pugsley. It’s the same E.D. coated, proprietary Surly 4130 Cro-Moly we all know and love. It’s durable, relatively light and uses size specific tubing for a tuned and lively ride. And, it can fit gigantic tires. The parts spec on this bike is what you’d expect to see on a single speed, picked because of its simplicity and radness. Knard 3.8” tires on 65mm rims are a versatile combo that will provide the same great float and traction of any fat bike without slowing you down on the hard stuff. Take the Pugsley SS and ride it at stuff as fast as you can, screaming. Charge the drifting snow late at night. Derby until you puke. The Pugsley SS demands this type of behavior. It is a single speed and it will not be denied.

Surly Ice Cream Truck

Sorry for the delayed blog but that is what travel does for you.  Got up early and headed east and am prepping to spend next week in Oregon as well - no complaints at all!  Yesterday I teased today's blog with the post about Surly bikes and I figured that with winter right around the corner that a fat bike would be a nice post.  So today I ran through the options in my mind and came up with the Surly Ice Cream Truck:

The Ice Cream Truck has the ability to float over pretty much anything you’ll find out there be it snow, rocks, mud, sand, or rocky mud. But unlike our other, more terrain crawling fat bike models, the Ice Cream Truck’s geometry is trail approved and ready to rip.
The Ice Cream Truck is made out of our own proprietary 4130 CroMoly steel and is ED coated. ED coating is a process that leaves a coating that, externally, provides a solid foundation for paint while also providing an added layer of corrosion protection internally. However, we still recommend an additional treatment such as Frame Saver or Boeshield. Ice Cream Truck begins to differ from all of our other fat bike models from there.
The Ice Cream Truck frame is symmetrically spaced at 190mm. It features our MDS dropout system so you have the option of running a 197mm thru-axle, 190mm geared or a single speed rear end. The complete Ice Cream Truck comes with only the Shimano direct mount, 197mm thru-axle chips and framesets come with all three MDS chips.  It also features a 132mm wide PressFit 41 bottom bracket. Giving the Ice Cream Truck a PF41 bottom bracket allowed us to move the stays out and create a much stiffer rear end. The frame is spec’d with a 44mm headtube to give you options in the fork department and comes with a suspension corrected straight blade fork with dropouts spaced at 150mm with a 15mm thru-axle.
When we designed the Ice Cream Truck we borrowed elements from the Krampus and Instigator geometries to make this bike feel frisky and limber. The complete build rounds out this bike as an aggressive trail bomber. And with 4.8” tires on 100mm rims you have the option of going through instead of around anything in your path.
MSRP is $2,700 with an Ice Cream Truck Ops for $2,400.  We are open Thursday from 10-8 so come on down and check out our fat bike inventory and if the Surly interests you we can order you one in!

Mountain Bike Madness - 2016 SPECIALIZED EPIC COMP 29

Well the dirt has stayed relatively dry and it is still a good time to get out on the mountain bike.  Looking at making an upgrade to a full suspension 29'er?  Then you should definitely check out the 2016 Specialized Epic Comp 29:

What makes a cross country mountain bike fast? Is it carbon and digital everything, or is it the perfect geometry, suspension, and attention to detail? Given the choice, we'll take the latter. That's why we constructed the Epic Comp from our lightweight, stiff, and reliable M5 aluminum, while the geo follows our XC 29 Geometry for explosive power, incredible speeds, and nimble handling. For the suspension, we included our Brain technology at the rear shock. This intelligent system is able to interprets the difference between rider and trail input, so it stays firm under effort and plush over bumps. And for the build, you'll find a mix of Shimano & SRAM 2x10 components that deliver a wide range of gears, dependable performance, and the assurance of durability for season after season of use.
  • Given its lightweight and ultra-stiff characteristics, M5 aluminum was the natural choice for the frame's construction. And when complemented with our speed-focused XC 29 Geometry and internal cable routing, you get a bike that compromises nothing in delivering explosive speed and hassle-free maintenance.
  • Custom FOX/ Specialized remote Mini Brain rear shock features AUTOSAG for easy set up and 100mm of fine-tunable suspension. To maximize efficiency, the proprietary design allows the shock to differentiate rider input and trail bumps, so the suspension feels firm under effort and plush over rough terrain.
  • A RockShox Reba RL 29 fork offers up 100mm of smooth travel, while an easily accessible compression and rebound adjusts permit you to customize the feel according to the terrain at hand.
  • Roval 29 alloy wheels feature a 21mm internal width, making them plenty stiff and lightweight for XC racing.
  • Shimano Deore M506 brake calipers and levers provide no-fuss dependability and feel in the brake department, ensuring that you have reliable hydraulic braking power over rough terrain
MSRP is $2,900 and we are open from 10-8 today for test rides!

Mountain Bike Time - Specialized Fuse Pro 6Fattie

Well since we all snuck off mountain biking last night at Sprague Brook (There were 8 total in the WNYMBA group and we saw many more on the trails) I figured we would do a Mountain Bike post.  And what better bike than the new 2016 Specialized Fuse Pro 6Fattie:

The Fuse Pro 6Fattie is the next step in the evolution of trail riding. Now we know that sounds bold coming from a hardtail, but with our all-new 6Fattie Wheel System, the Fuse puts out more traction, more floatation, and better handling, all without sacrificing anything to efficiency. And when teamed-up with a low and slack geometry that keeps you glued to the trail, and our exclusive Diamond Stay design that keeps the chainstays as short as possible for snappy handling and quick accelerations, that "bold" statement above becomes undeniable fact.
  • M4 Premium Aluminum proved to be the right material for the job, allowing a lightweight, durable frame with a low and slack geometry that's equal parts snappy and efficient on climbs and descents. It also allowed us to incorporate our exclusive Diamond Stay that accommodates the 6Fattie wheels/tires without compromising on our hallmark short chainstays that provide unrivaled handling and climbing prowess.
  • A RockShox Reba RC3 650+ fork was developed to deliver 100/120mm (size-specific) of plush, trail taming travel, while accommodating 15x110mm thru-axles for reliable handling and durability over rough, bumpy, or loose terrain.
  • 38mm-wide Roval 650b wheels are hand-built to provide the perfect tension and a longer lifespan, while an ultra-wide alloy design allows for higher tire volumes that decrease deflection in order to provide more stability and increased traction.
  • 650bx3.0" 6Fattie Ground Control tires feature a perfectly sized contact patch for life-changing levels of traction and control while cornering, all without sacrificing climbing efficiency or descending prowess.
  • SRAM's S-2200 11-speed crankset delivers all the ease-of-use climbing and descending efficiency that a one-by setup is known for, but what we're most excited about is how seamlessly it interfaces with our exclusive Diamond Stay design and bottom bracket junction to form a smooth, natural, and intuitive ride quality.
MSRP is $3,100.00 - For more information on this great adventure bike stop by the shop today from 10-8.  November days do not get much better than this for test rides!!!

Adventure By Bike - SPECIALIZED DIVERGE EXPERT X1

Don't get me wrong - I love my Specialized Diverge Expert Carbon from 2015 but this one is right up my alley with the 1X drive train.  Simplistic yet geared well enough that you can still crest some of the big climbs in WNY and around the world!  Check out the stats on the Specialized Diverge Expert X1:

The Diverge Expert X1 excels where the road ends. With its unique bottom bracket height and front rake angle, the Diverge performs confidently and smoothly across any terrain. Meanwhile, the high-end FACT 10r carbon frame and fork provide both efficiency and comfort for long adventures in the saddle. Unique to the X1 is the simplicity and efficiency of the SRAM Force 1 drivetrain, which provides ample gearing options without the headache of front derailleur adjustments. The only limit to your exploration is how good your map is.
  • The Specialized FACT 10r carbon frame and fork combine the lightweight performance and compliance of our top-end carbon production methods with the vibration damping of Zertz inserts to smooth out even the harshest roads and provide confident and predictable handling.
  • AXIS 4.0 Disc wheels provide plenty of control and performance in a bulletproof package, while the Roubaix Pro tires with Blackbelt protection keep flats at bay over rough terrain.
  • The SRAM Force 1 single-ring crankset is the ultimate in one-by simplicity, providing seamless, efficient power transfer without the worry of a front derailleur.
  • The SRAM Force 1 11-speed rear derailleur is designed to work in perfect harmony with a one-by drivetrain, providing ample gearing options for varying terrain.
MSRP is $3,900.00 - For more information on this great adventure bike stop by the shop today - November days do not get much better than this for test rides!!!
