Fast & Furious Friday - SPECIALIZED ALLEZ COMP SMARTWELD PART DEUX

A couple of weeks ago I did a blog posting on the Specialized Allez Comp Smartweld and that same week Mr. Tom Lonzi of Tom's Pro Bike fame was in California at Specialized learning about upcoming products and all sorts of other interesting tidbits.  He also got to ride some bikes and he grabbed the Specialized Allez Comp Smartweld and we chatted about it last weekend some.

As most of you that read this blog know or would understand, Tom has his pick from any number of top end frames and he was even offered the chance to ride a Tarmac, Venge, or Roubaix but he picked the Allez and he was very impressed with the overall performance of the bike.

Here is some more information on the Smartweld Technology:

The Allez Comp Smartweld features an incredible E5 aluminum frame with Smartweld technology, a full monocoque Tarmac carbon fork, and a Shimano Tiagra drivetrain for a light, stiff and fast bike.

  • Race-inspired, smooth-welded, fully-manipulated E5 Premium Aluminum frame with Smartweld technology and tapered headtube is light and fast
  • Tarmac Comp full monocoque FACT carbon fork with tapered steerer is super light with great torsional rigidity for high-speed handling
  • AXIS 1.0 wheelset is significantly lighter than comparable-level wheelsets; these tough wheels roll smooth and fast
  • FSA Gossamer BB30 alloy crankset with mid-compact gearing is stiff and light for efficiency over any terrain
  • Shimano Tiagra shifters with STI technology for quick, crisp shifting whenever you need
  • Supportive Body Geometry Riva Road Gel saddle is the perfect combination of comfort and efficiency
With a MSRP of $1,350 this is a great price point for an entry level road machine that can be raced or ridden long distance with comfort and speed mixed in!

If you are looking for a great entry level price point bike you cannot go wrong with the Allez Comp Smartwed.  Stop by the shop for more information!

It is never a bad way to start of the day looking at the S-Works Venge - especially the one ridden by the Manx Missile Mark Cavendish!  You may not have his sprinting ability, but that doesn't mean you cannot be seen riding one of these beauties around town!

The above picture was taken this past week in Upper Minnesota for the Arrowhead 135.  If you ever wondered what drew people in to clip into a bike with -50f wind chills blowing this scene might just give a glimpse into what they see and what we are missing!  More photos HERE and the race website is HERE.  If this motivates you to ride FAT this winter stop by the shop and check out our inventory!

Do you wear glasses and are wondering what is the best way to pick out Prescription Sunglasses for riding?  VeloNews gives you 5 points to consider when choosing your eyewear!

For more information on any of the above items stop by the shop and let's talk.  Looks like a warming trend is on the way and don't worry Spring is right around the corner so start prepping your bike for the upcoming season by bringing it in for a tune-up or pick out a new machine from our inventory!

Updated Cervelo P2 - JUST IN TIME FOR TRIATHLON SEASON!

Cervélo has updated its venerable P2 triathlon bike.

The new P2 has a wider range of fit options and features Cervélo's new P-Series geometry, which has sizes ranging from 45cm (which has 650c wheels) and 48 to 61 (700c wheels).

The model includes a Cervélo carbon, aero, rail-adjust seat post with 75mm of fore/aft adjustment. The bike also is spec'd with the Profile Design T2 Wing base bar and T4 Plus aero bar and a 1 1/8-inch steerer, which the company said allows for a wide range of aftermarket cockpit options.

The new model P2 has integrated storage and hydration options including toptube and downtube accessory mount bosses and an integrated seatpost accessory receiver. Cervélo said the accessory mount specifications have been shared with aftermarket manufacturers to help them develop compatible products.

The new P2 has aero features borrowed from the top-of-the-line P5 model. These include aero cable management, a dropped down tube that reduces the gap between it and the front wheel, flattened down tube mounts to decrease wind drag on bottles, and an extended seat tube cutout design.
The company said the new P2 is stiffer than the classic version with no increase in weight. Head tube stiffness increases by 16.4 percent and bottom bracket by 6.5 percent.

"What is really great about the new P2 is how many technologies are crammed into such a value-oriented platform. I think it's great that someone can walk into a bike shop and buy a really affordable bike and feel just as special as someone who bought a P5," said Cervélo senior product manager Heather Henderson.

The new P2 comes with Shimano 105 components and is available for shipment to retailers now in all sizes.  U.S. and Canadian MSRP: $2,800.

For more information or to set up a fitting stop by or give us a call!

Fat Bike Monday - SURLY PUG OPS, SALSA MUKLUK, LYNSKEY STRATUS

Yesterday was the first ever Tom's Pro Bike Fat Bike Snow Ride at Chestnut Ridge Park and the surrounding trails.  There was a Surly Pug Ops, a Salsa Mukluk, and a Lynskey Stratus out in the park and a great time was had.

We won’t beat you over the head re-explaining the idea of the Pugsley or fat bike theory. If you’re looking at this bike there’s a good chance you already know what you’re looking at, and if you don’t then check out the Pugsley and Moonlander pages. There’s plenty of info there to get you up to speed.
Pug Ops is a mid-fat fat bike. It shares the same frame as the standard Pugsley, and it has the same non-offset fork. The fork has clearance for 4.8˝ tires on 100mm rims, it’s spaced for 135mm hubs and has cage-mounting bosses on each leg for running either standard bottle cages in a high or low position or a larger gear cage.
IIt isn’t just the wider rims that set it apart though. Where the standard Pugsley sports 3.8” tires on 65mm rims and the Moonlander runs 4.8” tires on 100mm rims, Pug Ops has 3.8˝ Nate tires on 82mm Rolling Darryl rims, increasing the footprint of the 3.8” tire, and thereby its float and traction, while keeping the wheel weight lower than Moonlander. Many of Pug Ops’ parts are nicer. It gets our O.D. crank with 36/22 rings, 120tpi Nate 3.8˝ tires, Shimano LX derailleurs and SLX shifters and 180/160mm front/rear rotors with all black Avid BB7 cable disc brakes. This year it comes in a beautiful olive drab color with matching rims.

Bar mits were found on two bikes and there were platform, egg beaters, and SPD pedals on the bikes.  It was a consensus that for first timers platforms are the way to go because there is a lot of stopping and starting but if you are an experienced mountain biker then being clipped in is good as long as you have shoes that keep your digits warm.  Another topic was staying warm and the key is your feet and your hands.  If you do that well then you are in for a great time - but first you need the bike to get you there.

Stop by the shop and check out our Surly Pugsley and if you want to discuss ordering a Mukluk or Pug Ops then we can look into availability.  The Lynskey's are out for the season so you will have to wait until summer time to get hooked up with the Titanium Fat Bike!

Pro Bike Gallery: Tony Martin's Specialized Shiv TT S-Works
Tony Martin has been king of the individual time trial since claiming his first world championship in 2011. Since then, no other rider has been able to remove the rainbow chronograph stripes from Martin’s back. His team, Omega Pharma-Quick Step, also won back-to-back team time trial world titles in 2012 and 2013, and Martin has taken 11 victories in WorldTour individual time trials since the beginning of 2011. Each of those five world titles have come aboard the Specialized Shiv TT S-Works, and he will race on the Shiv again in 2014.
