Mountain Bike Madness - 2016 SPECIALIZED EPIC COMP 29

Well the dirt has stayed relatively dry and it is still a good time to get out on the mountain bike.  Looking at making an upgrade to a full suspension 29'er?  Then you should definitely check out the 2016 Specialized Epic Comp 29:

What makes a cross country mountain bike fast? Is it carbon and digital everything, or is it the perfect geometry, suspension, and attention to detail? Given the choice, we'll take the latter. That's why we constructed the Epic Comp from our lightweight, stiff, and reliable M5 aluminum, while the geo follows our XC 29 Geometry for explosive power, incredible speeds, and nimble handling. For the suspension, we included our Brain technology at the rear shock. This intelligent system is able to interprets the difference between rider and trail input, so it stays firm under effort and plush over bumps. And for the build, you'll find a mix of Shimano & SRAM 2x10 components that deliver a wide range of gears, dependable performance, and the assurance of durability for season after season of use.
  • Given its lightweight and ultra-stiff characteristics, M5 aluminum was the natural choice for the frame's construction. And when complemented with our speed-focused XC 29 Geometry and internal cable routing, you get a bike that compromises nothing in delivering explosive speed and hassle-free maintenance.
  • Custom FOX/ Specialized remote Mini Brain rear shock features AUTOSAG for easy set up and 100mm of fine-tunable suspension. To maximize efficiency, the proprietary design allows the shock to differentiate rider input and trail bumps, so the suspension feels firm under effort and plush over rough terrain.
  • A RockShox Reba RL 29 fork offers up 100mm of smooth travel, while an easily accessible compression and rebound adjusts permit you to customize the feel according to the terrain at hand.
  • Roval 29 alloy wheels feature a 21mm internal width, making them plenty stiff and lightweight for XC racing.
  • Shimano Deore M506 brake calipers and levers provide no-fuss dependability and feel in the brake department, ensuring that you have reliable hydraulic braking power over rough terrain
MSRP is $2,900 and we are open from 10-8 today for test rides!

Mountain Bike Monday - S-Works Epic 29 World Cup

Last week we posted a picture of Peter Sagan jumping an S-Works Tarmac and here is a photo of him winning the Mountain Bike World Championships for Specialized back in the day.  Today I figured posting a blog on the S-Works Epic 29 World Cup would be a great way to kick off 2015 and our Mountain Bike Monday blogs:

The full-suspension, carbon fiber, S-Works Epic is the first 29er to win a World Cup event, and the bike Mountain Bike Action magazine describes as the "best bike we've ever ridden". One of two S-Works versions, the S-Works Epic World Cup is equipped with SRAM's XX1 component group.
  • FACT 11m carbon, 95mm-travel, FSR frame w/ World Cup Geometry for the ultimate XC race machine
  • Specialized/FOX Brain shock w/ AUTOSAG knows the difference between smooth and rough terrain
  • RockShox SID World Cup fork w/ Brain damping and 95mm travel for race-ready XC performance
  • Roval Control SL 29 carbon wheelset w/ Zero Bead Hook and 142+ spacing for greater control
  • S-Works FACT carbon crankset w/ custom XX1 chainring for efficient power transfer
  • SRAM XX1 11-speed rear derailleur for high-performance XC racing componentry
  • SRAM XX1 11-speed trigger for efficiency and simplicity on the trail
  • Lightweight and compliant S-Works FACT carbon seatpost
  • The custom color—Rocket Red—is designed to naturally age over time. It will exhibit splashes of a dark rich color when exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. This finish is deliberate and therefore not covered under the traditional warranty policy.
MSRP is $10,500.00 and we have one of these in stock on our floor right now for you to test ride!

Mountain Bike Monday - LYNSKEY MOUNTAIN BIKES

Photo: Well the Lynskey Performance Designs Ridgeline made it to DuPont State Forest today. If you ride dirt then you must ride this dirt before it is too late. Great area for riding and I really haven't even found a lot of the trails in the area!

If you have been following Facebook at all - you know I have been traveling around the south with my Lynskey Ridgeline 29 Titanium Hardtail.  They have a full line of mountain bikes and even though they may be on the higher end of the cost scale, if you do a lot of mountain biking I feel the cost is justified.  They are durable and reliable and manufactured right here in the USA!  Here is the full Lynskey Mountain Bike Line.

If you are looking to save money and missed out on the Reverse Bike Auction and all the great deals on 2013 or older models. Until 10/31/2014 - ALL 2014 BIKES ARE 10% OFF & YOU RECEIVE A GIFT CARD FROM TOM'S PRO BIKE FOR 10% OF REMAINING VALUE.  That is not a bad deal at all.  The remaining 2013 inventory is on sale - just not as big of a price cut that you could have scored the last 3 or 4 weeks with the Auction - stop by for more information.

We are open from 10-6 today so come on down - the weather looks like it is trying to clear up for some more beautiful fall riding.

Don't forget we stock Assos Clothing & Accessories now.  In the picture of Tom below from Arizona he is wearing a kit from Assos, so when he gets back ask him about the line and get some first hand review about a great line of clothing.

Indoor Race Series information is out. Click on the link to register and purchase your race credits because it is going on right now!  Sure the weather was ideal for outdoor riding recently but you saw what happened last weekend.  Don't miss out on some great winter training opportunities!

Travel By Bike Thursday - TOUR DIVIDE RACE 2014 EDITION

Tomorrow is the Grand Depart of the 2014 Tour Divide Race.  This beast starts in Banff, Alberta and for those that finish they will arrive in Antelope Wells, NM.  In honor of those that will be traversing 2745 Miles of UNSUPPORTED mountain bike miles we are going to discuss some of the different options out there to carry gear on your bike.

The Great Divide Route is the world's longest off-pavement cycling route. It was tirelessly mapped over a 4 year span, and published in 1998 by Adventure Cycling Association, North America's premiere bicycle travel organization. The route is highlighted by long dirt roads and jeep trails that wend their way through forgotten passes of the Continental Divide. It travels through Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, and the United States of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico (map). By route's end a thru-rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet of vertical (equivalent to summiting Mount Everest from sea-level 7 times).

Above is a picture of a Hardtail bike loaded with some great gear bags.

Frame Bag - These are specifically made to fit YOUR bikes frame size and provides quick access to extra food stores/tools/clothing.

Gas Tank (Bento Bag on Steroids) - Camera and food storage.

Jerry Can - More access for smaller items that you need to be able to get at quickly.

Sweet Roll (Front Bag) - Carries your tent/bivy sleeping bag

Seat Bag - Excess clothing or food stores.  Cooking equipment, First Aid Kit, Water Filtration System

You don't need rack and panniers to tour.  A lot of times those set ups would fail on this type of route that is why they go with soft bags.

Plus you get to see scenery like this.  For more information on a bike capable of carrying you across this route or for the accessories for your current bike stop by Tom's and let's talk!

A great way to test the your new Mountain Bike out and to start off the Mountain Bike season is to race. Single Track Racing is hosting a 6 (Only 2 left) race series at Sprague Brook on Tuesdays. Check out their Facebook Page for more information orRegister Here. This is in full swing and to help support Mountain Biking in Western New York come on out for the next 4 races (or 1 or 2 or 3 if that is all you can make). The group that runs these races are good folk and deserve our support!
Check out our Events Page to find out what is going on around the shop and don't forget time is running out to get your bike serviced for The Ride for Roswell June 28th!

Huge clothing sale taking place right now - stop by and check out our inventory! Included in this great sale is Mavic Mountain Bike Clothing and road and mountain bike shoes as well.

Mountain Bike Week - WEDNESDAY TRAVEL DESTINATION

Bridal Veil Falls - DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

Welcome back to the continuation of Travel Destination week and lucky for you I head back north tomorrow morning but I am going to wrap up the talk about some Mountain Bike Travel destination of Western North Carolina. Today I returned to DuPont State Forest in Ashville, NC area and rode some new trails again today and it made me smile as much as it did yesterday and Monday!

The area is about 12 hours south of Buffalo via car but very easily accessible from Charlotte also. There are many lodging options in Hendersonville (about 30 minutes away by car) or other small cities surrounding the area. There are limited services once you get to the forest so make sure you pack your water and food in with you.

The trails are awesome. There is a mix of forest service roads and single track with great flow to it. There is a lot of climbing involved so bring the climbing legs but the downhills will make it all worthwhile!

So which bike would work best here? I brought my 29'er Hardtail and there is truly no need for 29" down here but it is what I have so no complaints there. Full suspension would be nice on some of the single track but for the most part I was very comfortable on the hardtail. Rigid is definitely a possibility but make sure you have you tires at the right pressure to help take some of the bumps away from your body.

All in all which every bike you have or are looking at from our inventory at Tom's would suffice from Specialized to Lynskey and from hard tail to full suspension. Just bring a camera for all the cool waterfall shots like above. Stop by the shop to check out our inventory or pick up the accessories necessary to make your trip worry free!
A great way to test the your new Mountain Bike out and to start off the Mountain Bike season is to race. Single Track Racing is hosting a 6 (Only 3 left after today's) race series at Sprague Brook on Tuesdays. Check out their Facebook Page for more information orRegister Here. Hamburg Road Race and Criterium are this weekend (Road Race is Saturday morning and the Crit Race is Sunday afternoon) so if you are looking for a race sign up through the BBC page.

Mountain Bike Week - TUESDAY TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

Welcome back to the continuation of Travel Destination week and lucky for you I am traveling (that is why this is late again) and I am going to talk about some Mountain Bike Travel destinations with a nice little road hill climb added in as well.   Today we are returning to DuPont State Forest in Ashville, NC area.   I got the chance to return here and ride some new trails again today and it made me smile as much as it did yesterday!

As I said yesterday, the area is about 12 hours south of Buffalo via car but very easily accessible from Charlotte also. If you want to get some road riding in down here be prepared for climbing.  This afternoon I headed up the road to Laurel Park and got a chance to see this view.  4 states are visible from up here and the ride down is as easy as the climb up is hard - but it is a great way to use your road muscles instead of frying the mountain ones all week long!

Mountain Bike Week - MONDAY TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

High Falls - DuPont State Forest, North Carolina

Welcome back to a new week and lucky for you I am traveling (that is why this is late) and I am going to talk about some Mountain Bike Travel destinations.  Today we are starting with DuPont State Forest in Ashville, NC area.  I finally got a work assignment in this area and jumped at the chance to bring my bike down with me to test out the riding that I have heard so many great things about.

Mountain Bike Monday - SALSA BUCKSAW

So what do we have here????  A full suspension mountain bike that is capable of carrying 3.8" tires - Fat Bike Tires - Snow Tires - Beach Tires - Mountain Bike Tires!!!  This is the Salsa Bucksaw the newest introduction into FatBikes and Salsa has worked 3 years figuring out how to do it Full Suspension and they have succeeded.

From everything I have read so far people are unsure if it will be capable of running a 29"+ wheelset as well but if it does this is going to be the 1 bike you need for all off road experiences.  Not that you couldn't ride this in it's current state off-road in all conditions but the 29"+ helps reduce drag and would be a faster set up.

Salsa partnered with Rockshox on the front fork as well and supposedly the front fork will be available on the open market.  You just need to make sure it fits your current headtube set up before going forward with the switch over to a hardtail Fat Bike set up.  If it works you could add that fork to your current mountain bike and make a hardtail 29 rear and 3.8" Fat up front.  That would be fun to ride!

I can promise you that availability will be very limited on these for the first couple of production runs.  If you are interested at all in something like this you need to contact Tom directly to see if we can get in line with the distributor.  I know I am contemplating it that is for sure!

To start off the season Single Track Racing is hosting a 6 race series at Sprague Brook starting May 20, 2014. Check out theirFacebook Pagefor more information or Register Here.

Huge clothing sale taking place right now - stop by and check out our inventory!
Included in this great sale is Mavic Mountain Bike Clothing.
Starting today through April 20th - UGOE 500 Lumen Light receive 20% off of $75.00 MSRP ($60.00 Sale Price) Stop by the shop to check this awesome light out. If you ride at Dusk or Dawn this light will help you be seen and to see!
