SURLY PUGS OP

With all of the snow we have received this past week it is time to show off another one of the fat bikes that we can get for you - The Surly Pugs Op:

Pug Ops is a mid-fat fat bike. It shares the same frame as the standard Pugsley, and it has the same non-offset fork. The fork has clearance for 4.8˝ tires on 100mm rims, it’s spaced for 135mm hubs and has cage-mounting bosses on each leg for running either standard bottle cages in a high or low position or a larger gear cage.
It isn’t just the wider rims that set it apart though. Where the standard Pugsley sports 3.8” tires on 65mm rims and the Moonlander runs 4.8” tires on 100mm rims, Pug Ops has 3.8˝ Nate tires on 82mm Rolling Darryl rims, increasing the footprint of the 3.8” tire, and thereby its float and traction, while keeping the wheel weight lower than Moonlander. Many of Pug Ops’ parts are nicer. It gets our O.D. crank with 36/22 rings, 120tpi Nate 3.8˝ tires, Shimano LX derailleurs and SLX shifters and 180/160mm front/rear rotors with all black Avid BB7 cable disc brakes. This year it comes in a beautiful olive drab color with matching rims.

SRAM PROTOTYPE ELECTRIC DRIVETRAIN

We have Shimano and Campagnolo Electric Drivetrain and now it looks like SRAM is in the final stages of releasing theirs.  This cross bike was spotted at the Illinois State Championships this past weekend and you can see the SRAM crank and a smaller wire at the rear derailleur that is typical to electric drivetrains.

Here is the write up on it:

SRAM’s long-rumored development of an electronic drivetrain went public Sunday when a rider in SRAM-branded kit raced on what is clearly a prototype shift-by-wire system at the Illinois cyclocross state championships.
SRAM is remaining tight-lipped about the groupset. “That’s a developmental product. I have no comment,” SRAM marketing manager Michael Zellmann told VeloNews.
With the public, if accidental, unveiling of an electronic group, SRAM joins competitors Shimano and Campagnolo in the steady move away from mechanical shifting.
Little is known about the group, aside from what can be seen in this photo. What is obvious is that an electric wire, not a cable, is actuating the rear derailleur. There is also something mounted to the rider’s stem, which we assume is some sort of battery.
The derailleur is has a short cage, indicating that the initial group will be targeted at the road and cyclocross markets. The shifters are matched with cable-actuated brakes, not the company’s hydraulic braking system.
The finish is rough, and the components are quite obviously in the prototype phase. We hope to learn more soon.

We will keep you posted as more information comes along from SRAM as well on this.

I also found a cool video and here is the link to Road Bike Party 2

Martyn Ashton's Colnago C59 Disc from Road Bike Party 2 video

And here is the bike that was used in the video and a write up of that as well:

While Martyn Ashton's brilliant Road Bike Party 2 video is currently going viral, BikeRadar decided to take a closer look at the bike used in the video, it's Colnago's C59 Disc.
Martyn's Colnago C59 Disc is the world's first production disc-braked carbon fibre road racing bike, one of the fastest machines out there with a near identical frame to the one raced by France’s Thomas Voeckler in the Tour de France.
So, give this bike to a seriously fast rider and you'll get results, but give this bike to Martyn Ashton, Danny Macaskill or Chris Akrigg and you'll get results of an altogether different kind.
The bike has inherited a few subtle modifications and as a result would cost in the region of £15,000 / $24,500 to reproduce.
Despite the absolute brutality that this bike was subjected to, the only failures are said to have been punctures along with one brake line that was pulled out as a result of a crash.
Martyn took a standard set of shimano xt flat pedals and modified them to minimise their profile so as to look more in keeping with being used on a road bike: martyn took a standard set of shimano xt flat pedals and modified them to minimise their profile so as to look more in keeping with being used on a road bike

The Weather Outside Is Frightful - SURLY PUGSLEY

Well the snow is falling and we have the perfect bike for you.  We have a Large and a Medium in stock and can order other sizes or models as well.

Here is what Surly says about this bomb of a bike:

By now you probably know that Pugsley was created to go where so-called “all terrain” bikes flounder. The floatation and traction afforded by large-volume, low-pressure tires can get you over and through otherwise un-rideable terrain…sand, mud, wet rocks and roots, ice and dense or packed snow.
The Pugsley frame features 135mm-spaced horizontal rear-loading dropouts with a derailleur hanger. The stays are offset 17.5mm to accommodate a derailleured drivetrain, an internally-geared hub or a single speed or even fixed gear drivetrain and never worry about chain-on-tire rub.
Pugsley is available as a frameset and as a complete bike. The frame will accept tires up to 3.8˝ wide. The fork is a 135mm-spaced symmetric version with extra cage mounts on each leg and room for a 4.8” tire if you should choose to go even bigger up front. If you want to be able to swap front and rear wheels, get an offset Moonlander fork. This can be pretty handy in extreme temperature and physical conditions if, say, your freehub body were to seize up in the middle of nowhere at -50°F.
Our standard Pugsley complete bike sports a nice mix of components chosen for their durability and value. We’ve given it Nate 3.8” tires on 65mm Marge Lite rims, Microshift thumb shifters, which work well especially when wearing mittens and Avid BB7 cable disc brakes (totally black). This is a solid kit that will serve you well wherever you go. Pugsley is offered in sizes XS (about 14˝) to XL (about 22˝) and comes in all black or black and blue.
To test ride one stop by the shop, bring a smile, and leave with a great bike to ride year round but especially now that the snow is falling.  $1800 for a smile is well worth it and just think how fast you will be next spring when you get back on your race bike!

Mountain Bike Monday - SALSA EL MARIACHI SINGLE SPEED

One of the perks of my day job is I get to travel.  And when I travel and time permits, I find a bike shop in the local market and go check out their bike inventory (and other toys they carry ;) ).  This past week I found my way to Richmond, VA and stopped at a local shop and found this beautiful Salsa El Mariachi on display and once I stopped drooling over it I decided to do a blog post about it.  If you are in the market for a Rigid 29'er SS then this bike is one to contemplate!

Here is what Salsa says:
The El Mariachi SS is our take on the singlespeed: one gear, rigid, with no provisions for derailleurs…a single-bladed Swiss Army knife you might say.
Our proven Alternator Dropouts provide secure chain tensioning, and quick wheel removal and installation. For 2014, we shorten the chainstays and update the geometry to deliver the same overall feel, while boosting the bike’s on-trail agility. The Kung Fu CroMoly frame delivers a lively and comfortable ride.

El Mariachi SS. One love.
The only change I would make to the stock build is putting Red Brake Housing (which is now available for Hydraulic Brakes from Jagwire) on it, find a red/white color scheme saddle, and possibly look into a Red Crank Set for it or a Red SS Chain just to tie all the color together.  Obviously blue, yellow, or red cages would be in order as well.  Nothing mechanical - just cosmetic changes to bling it out even more!
If you are interested in learning more about the Salsa El Mariachi stop by the shop.  It is a bike that we would have to order in for you but if you love the look of it on the blog just think how much more awesome (if that is even possible) it will be when you pick it up after the guys build it up for you!

HED Ardennes PLUS SL

I first heard about the Ardennes Plus back in the spring time and I was very excited to learn more and hopefully test ride or purchase a pair for my Gravel/Cross rig.  After checking them out at the shop and reading more reviews on them I am even more excited to try a pair next spring.
Here is what HED has to say about this wheelset:

Introducing the new Ardennes Plus
The all new Ardennes + is a 25mm wide rim that extends the benefits of the 23mm wide C2 technology. The main improvements over convential narrow rims (and even our current 23mm wide C2 technology) include: better corner grip, improved comfort, and increased rolling speed. This widened platform provides many benefits. The tire casing is allowed to spread out and make a larger contact patch with the ground. This improves corner grip as well as lowering rolling resistance. The wider rim also increases the amount of air volume which in turn allows the tire to be run at lower pressure. This lower pressure means that the bumps will be smoothed out in the road, which improves comfort. Unlike with narrow rims, the wide platform supports the tire sidewall so that you can corner with more confidence, as there is no tire flop. Lateral stiffness and drivetrain efficiency are improved in the Plus wheels due to the increased width. This is akin to the oversizing of bicycle frame tubes - bigger is better.
The 25 mm wide platform provides a more stable platform for tires of any size. This versatility in tire size and the ability to run lower pressures makes it a great choice for cobbles, gravel, and dirt, while a larger contact patch increases rolling speed across every surface, and silky smooth on the pavement.
Features:
  • New 25mm wide rim that is tubeless ready. A very tight bead (shelf design) seat helps reduce the amount of sealant needed, helping keep the total wheel weight low.
  • Reflective decals for more visibility in low light.
  • 2X spoke pattern rear wheel for efficient power transfer to the rear wheel.
  • Compatible with 10 or 11speed Shimano, SRAM and Campy components
  • Large 28mm rear bearings for long lasting smooth ride bearings.
  • A bigger rim, for bigger tire, for more grip, for a smoother ride, for a bigger smile, for a happier faster you!
I think they will look pretty good on my Gunnar Crosshairs so keep your eyes open for a true review next spring but until then Cyclingnews.com provided the following review:
After pioneering the "wider is better" approach to road rim design more than five years ago with the original Ardennes, HED is now pushing the concept even further with the new Ardennes Plus and its whopping 20mm internal width – 5mm wider than the norm and on par with many mountain bike wheels. While the idea may be radical to some, the positive effect it has on ride performance is undeniable – and big.
Increasing rim width does several things: it adds air volume for more comfort and traction, it boosts sidewall support for better casing stability under hard cornering loads, and it flattens out the profile of the tread cap to effectively put more rubber down on the road. This isn't just theoretical hypothesizing, either – all of these performance gains are easily felt when riding the Ardennes Plus, especially when switching from rims with more traditional dimensions.
We started our test period with familiar 23mm-wide Continental Grand Prix 4000 clinchers and ultralight butyl tubes at our usual 100-105psi inflation pressures. On a standard set of 15mm-wide rims, those tires reliably measure 23.5mm. On our Ardennes Plus SL test set, however, they balloon out to a gargantuan 27mm – all without any additional weight.
As compared to those same tires on standard rims, we noticed a much-improved ride over bumps and rough road texture, even at identical pressures. Likewise, the squatter cross-section lends fantastically confident traction through fast corners. Dropping the operating pressure down to about 90-95psi enhanced those advantages even further with no noticeable increase in rolling resistance.
In other words, you get more speed (or more specifically, less slowing down) with no downside.
Flaring out the base of the tire on such a wide rim revealed one surprise bonus, too. As the tire is now nearly the same width as the rim, it's easy to remove the wheel from the frame and fork without having to open up the brake quick-release. We're guessing such a smooth transition might pay dividends in terms of aerodynamics, too, but the Ardennes Plus rim is just 24.5mm deep, anyway, so it's not something we ever noticed during testing.
The Ardennes Plus SL isn't only about having an ultra-wide rim as we also found it to be an excellent set of road wheels overall. In addition to being wide, the new rim is also tubeless compatible (with tape) and supposedly just 15g heavier per hoop than the previous Ardennes thanks to more carefully controlled wall thicknesses, according to HED's Andy Tetmeyer.
Claimed rim weight is a reasonable 465g apiece and actual total weight for our test set is very competitive 1,536g (667g front, 869g rear, with tubeless tape installed).
We also found it easy to seat a variety of Road Tubeless models with a conventional floor pump, including Hutchinson's new Sector 28. The flat shelf by the bead hooks provides a stable lock for extra security and yet it isn’t a bear to remove the tire by hand in the event of a puncture, either.
Hubs are essentially carried over from previous HED models (aside from new 11-speed compatibility) with sealed cartridge bearings plus handy grease ports in the rear hub for quick and easy overhauls. Our hubs started out feeling smooth and have stayed that way five months later (although we should qualify that by saying they haven't seen much water).
HED joins everything together with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes in a radial front, 2-cross rear pattern. Wheel stiffness is very good but not exceptionally so. HED approves this setup for riders weighing less than 102kg (225lb) but we'd recommend that riders looking for something particularly sturdy opt for the stouter 'Stallion' build with its more generous 20-hole front and 28-hole rear drilling.
We have but one nit to pick here. The included quick-release skewers are lightweight at 104g a set but their external-cam design continues to generate a lot of friction instead of transferring most of your hand effort into clamp force. We'd certainly prefer that HED switch to a more mechanically efficient internal-cam design instead but aside from that, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend these for any rider seeking a high-performance set of do-it-all, everyday wheels that put a greater priority on ride quality and grip than all-out aerodynamic performance.

Price: US$1,150
Weight: 1,536g (667g front, 869g rear, with tubeless tape installed; plus 104 for skewers)
Pros: Awesome ride quality and cornering traction, competitively lightweight, good stiffness, easy tubeless compatibility
Cons: External-cam skewers are prone to friction
BikeRadar verdict: 4 ½ stars
