Surly Ice Cream Truck

Sorry for the delayed blog but that is what travel does for you.  Got up early and headed east and am prepping to spend next week in Oregon as well - no complaints at all!  Yesterday I teased today's blog with the post about Surly bikes and I figured that with winter right around the corner that a fat bike would be a nice post.  So today I ran through the options in my mind and came up with the Surly Ice Cream Truck:

The Ice Cream Truck has the ability to float over pretty much anything you’ll find out there be it snow, rocks, mud, sand, or rocky mud. But unlike our other, more terrain crawling fat bike models, the Ice Cream Truck’s geometry is trail approved and ready to rip.
The Ice Cream Truck is made out of our own proprietary 4130 CroMoly steel and is ED coated. ED coating is a process that leaves a coating that, externally, provides a solid foundation for paint while also providing an added layer of corrosion protection internally. However, we still recommend an additional treatment such as Frame Saver or Boeshield. Ice Cream Truck begins to differ from all of our other fat bike models from there.
The Ice Cream Truck frame is symmetrically spaced at 190mm. It features our MDS dropout system so you have the option of running a 197mm thru-axle, 190mm geared or a single speed rear end. The complete Ice Cream Truck comes with only the Shimano direct mount, 197mm thru-axle chips and framesets come with all three MDS chips.  It also features a 132mm wide PressFit 41 bottom bracket. Giving the Ice Cream Truck a PF41 bottom bracket allowed us to move the stays out and create a much stiffer rear end. The frame is spec’d with a 44mm headtube to give you options in the fork department and comes with a suspension corrected straight blade fork with dropouts spaced at 150mm with a 15mm thru-axle.
When we designed the Ice Cream Truck we borrowed elements from the Krampus and Instigator geometries to make this bike feel frisky and limber. The complete build rounds out this bike as an aggressive trail bomber. And with 4.8” tires on 100mm rims you have the option of going through instead of around anything in your path.
MSRP is $2,700 with an Ice Cream Truck Ops for $2,400.  We are open Thursday from 10-8 so come on down and check out our fat bike inventory and if the Surly interests you we can order you one in!

Litespeed T5G

Since we did a Litespeed write up yesterday I figured I would highlight one of their bikes today.  We recently did a build for a customer of the Litespeed T5G:

Available in Shimano Ultegra Disc or frame or frameset

The super-versatile, go-anywhere adventure bike made to outperform anything in its class. Same trusted T5 build quality with additional clearance to accommodate up to 40 mm tires and plenty of gravel turnover. Same taller, oversized 44 mm head tube and longer chainstays to make it comfortable for the long haul. USA-made in our Chattanooga factory with size-specific 3Al/2.5V titanium.

  • Oversized 44mm headtube and PF30 BB technology
  • Tapered, shaped, oversized 3Al/2.5V tubing
  • Ovalized seat tube/down tube junction for drivetrain stiffness and power transfer
  • Micro-sized dropout with replaceable derailleur hanger
  • Available in sizes S, M, ML, L, and XL
  • Handmade in the USA using T5 technology
Here is a write up/review for your enjoyment as well: CLICK HERE

If you are looking for a solid all around work bike then I would highly recommend looking at this bike.  MSPR on the frame is $2,200.00.  T5G with 11 Speed Ultegra drivetrain $4,700.00

Tire Size & Rolling Resistance - WRAP UP

It all started last Friday with a post about Rolling Resistance based on Tire Size and Inflation Pressure.  That got the mind working all weekend and we moved forward into this week about bikes and other good stuff.

Monday we brought out the Specialized Diverge A1.  This bike is capable of 35mm tires and runs disc brakes and is based on the Roubaix/CruX platform with long endurance road/gravel rides in mind.

Tuesday we highlighted an entry level bike by Felt the V100.  Capable of the same larger tires that the Diverge runs but built with a lower component level and a lower price point.

Wednesday, thanks to Jeff, brought on a Latex Tube vs Butyl Tube discussion.  If you are a road bike rider and looking for a way to lower rolling resistance on skinny tires then latex tubes is an inexpensive way to try something new out.  Comparable to Tubular Tires but at a much lower price point this is a good experiment to use before stepping up in wheel sets!

Thursday wrapped up the week with the Fuji Tread 1.3 Disc.  This bike fits right in between the Felt V100 and the Specialized Diverge A1 price wise and is another option at wider tires and endurance geometry.

Come on in today or tomorrow from 10-6 and check out our great inventory.  Hopefully the snow stops falling and the temperatures start going up so we can all get out on the bikes!

Lake Effect Snow Tuesday - LAUF FORK

I have been watching the Lauf Fork for a while now and have just become very interested in it.  I am thinking about adding one to my "Gravel Grinder" rig and along with the CobbleGobbler seat post you could turn a cross bike into a mini-Full Suspension Gravel Rig.  Keep your eyes open for further posts concerning that transformation.

Tom's has access to the Lauf Fork through QBP now so if you have an interest in adding this type of "suspension" fork to your bike arsenal stop by the shop.  29" (700) size are available now and 650b (27.5") will be available after the new year.

Do you have a bike lover on your Christmas List?  Check out Tom's Holiday Specials.  If you are unsure of what to but pick up a Gift Card and let them chose from our inventory or get an idea from the Great Gift Idea section based on your budget.

We have some excess 2014 and older inventory that we are trying to clear out to make way for the 2015 models that are becoming available each day.  For 2014 you receive 10% off the MSRP and also a 10% Gift Card to use in the store.  We have financing available if you quality and we also have free lay-a-way: 20% down is all that is required to secure your new ride for the 2015 season and beyond.

Our 2013 and older inventory is marked down even lower as well.  It may not be as low as it was during our Reverse Auction Sale but you can still save a lot if we have your size and model choice available.

If you have been following the blog you have seen this photo of Tom in Arizona wearing his ASSOS kit.  We recently became an Authorized Retailer for ASSOS and their outstanding line of clothing.  Today they announced a special Facebook promotion where you could win signed Swiss National Cycling Team jerseys.  First hurdle is owning some ASSOS gear so stop into the shop today and take a look at our inventory.  While you are there ask Tom about how comfortable and durable their clothing is.  Nothing like an honest review right from the wearer of the clothing!

Indoor Race Series information is out. Click on the link to register and purchase your race credits because it is going on right now!  Sure the weather was ideal for outdoor riding recently but you saw what happened last weekend.  Don't miss out on some great winter training opportunities!
