Travel By Bike Thursday - ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION

Looking to do a bicycle tour in the coming year?  Today we are highlighting a great organization that provides routes & maps and is a great resource to get information on touring all over the United States.  Here is some information on Adventure Cycling Association and what they have to offer:

Mission and Programs

Adventure Cycling Association inspires and empowers people to travel by bicycle.  Established in 1973 as Bikecentennial, Adventure Cycling is the premier bicycle-travel organization in North America with 45,000 members. We are headquartered in Missoula, Montana.  As a nonprofit organization, all proceeds from tours, sales, and membership go directly back into supporting our mission and programs. (New to Adventure Cycling? Get a free info packet -- we'll throw in a cool tube sticker too!)

Adventure Cycling's programs include:

I have done two different tours - The Underground Railroad and The Pacific Coast Route.  I used maps from Adventure Cycling for both and they are outstanding for finding your way in unknown territory.  They hold up to the rigors of bike touring and weather changes and provide valuable information about services that are upcoming.

On my first tour, I had an issue with a bar-con shifter and we had to make some decisions on how to handle it.  I called Tom and arranged for him to ship a set of shifters to a bike shop that was the next city up from where we were originally stopping and made arrangements for them to install them for me.  Without these maps there would have been a lot of computer searching taking place.  I found the reliability of the maps to be very good as well and they update them periodically and continually post printable updates on the website as well.

Contact us with any touring questions you might have about gear, routes, or any other question that comes up.  We strive to be a well rounded bike shop and want to be able to provide answers to all of your questions!

Mountain Bike Monday - Felt Nine 50

Looking for a new mid-entry level mountain bike to shred some dirt with this summer?  Check out the Felt Nine 50:  With a double-butted 6061 aluminum frame designed to optimize the trail-riding advantages of the larger 29-inch wheels, the Nine 50 flows through the rough stuff and devours the climbs. And thanks to the lightweight hydroformed tubing and reworked geometry, its stability is balanced with a quick-handling, lively feel. It’s the best of both worlds.

  • Frame:  FELT Nine series 29'er frame, double butted 6061 aluminum w/ tapered head tube, Hydroform top tube and seat stays, forged dropouts, oversized integrated head tube, rack & fender mounts, disc brake specific
  • Fork:  RockShox Recon Silver TK 29 solo air, tapered aluminum steerer tube, forged alloy crown, magnesium lowers, disc mount, lockout, adjustable air spring, adjustable rebound, 100mm travel (80mm fork on 14" offering)
  • Drivetrain:  Shimano Deore SL-M591 30 speed Rapid Fire shifters, Shimano Deore FD-M590-10 front derailleur, Shimano Deore FD-M593 Shadow rear derailleur, Shimano Deore FC-M590-10 Hollowtech II crankset w/ 42X32X24T chainrings, Shimano HG-54 chain, Shimano HG-61 11-36T cassette
  • Components:  Avid Elixr 1 hydraulic disc brakes, w/ 180mm front/160mm rear rotors, Felt butted aluminum 25mm riser bar, Felt aluminum stem, Felt aluminum 2-bolt seatpost, Felt mountain design low profile saddle w/satin steel rails
  • Wheelset:  WTB SX-17 29 aluminum 32h disc-brake rims with eyelets, Shimano RM-35 QR 8/9 speed cassette 32h hubset, w/ centerlock disc mount, stainless 14g spokes with alloy nipples, WTB Prowler SL Folding Tires
  • Finish:  Pearl White
  • Sizes:  29" x XS(14"), S(16"), M(18"), L(20"), XL(22")

  • I currently own a Felt Elite Nine from about 4 years ago.  I imagine that this Felt Nine 50 is the equivalent to my bike based on price point and I love the bike.  It has served me very well on all types of terrain and currently it is set up for my son to ride - yes they grow up and can ride your bikes so be warned!  A couple of adjustments though and it will be back to being my single track go to bike.  I have modified mine slightly (I think that goes hand in hand with being a bike geek) to be a 2x10 drive train, Paul Component Thumb Shifters and an H-Bar with Magura Hydraulic Brakes.  I also have a different wheel set than the original but the originals are still around and work fine - just being used on a different bike currently.

    FELT MSRP: $1659.00
Tom's Pro Bike Blog Price: $1550.00 - YOU MUST MENTION THIS BLOG TO RECEIVE THIS PRICE.  THIS BIKE IS AVAILABLE BY ORDER ONLY.  CALL FOR MORE DETAILS.

Saturday's Miscellaneous Musings - A Bunch Of Things!

Thanks for all of the Blog Support in 2012 and just think this only started Thanksgiving Week.  We hope you are getting a lot of good information out of it and remember if there is anything you want discussed leave us a comment or send an e-mail and we will look into it and post some information for you.  You might be asking the one question someone else is thinking about as well but is afraid to ask - so ask away!

There is still time to register for the upcoming Winter Race Series - The room will be getting cleaned out from the basement paint job this coming week and the trainers will be looked at and they will be ready for your bike - come on in and sign up!  Don't miss out on some companion based training this winter - you won't regret it (Unless you don't like pain!)

I have spent some time watching the Saturday races wrap up the past couple of weeks and am even contemplating signing up for a Tuesday night opening just to have some fun with fellow bikers!  It is a great way to stay in shape during the cold and dark winter months Buffalo throws at us each year and you can meet some new riding buddies as well!

Another shot of yesterday's Amira SL4 we discussed.  I could not get it loaded on the original blog and it is such a beautiful bike there is never a problem with re-posting some photos!

Monday we resume our normal schedule and will be highlighting a mountain bike for those dirt lovers out there.  Speaking of which I took my Salsa Mukluk out to Sprague Brook Sunday afternoon and did some single-track riding.  It wasn't easy but it sure was fun!  I am more than will to share this beast if you want to give it a shot to see if you are really interested in a great way to pass the winter.  I can bring it to the shop or we can meet by the snow and you can take it for a spin.  I have other ways to entertain myself in the snow for you to experience the awesomeness (is that even a word?) of snow biking!  Send us an
e-mail or call me on Saturday's at the shop to discuss some different options.

Have a great weekend and we want to thank all of you for your support and we hope you had a Happy Blessed New Year and we look forward to being the best bike shop you have ever visited in 2013 and beyond!

Travel By Bike Thursday - SALSA VAYA

Happy New Year and welcome to 2013 - We hope you have the best year ever and all of your bicycle training and racing goes better than expected.  Today we are going to feature an outstanding Touring/Commuting bike - the Salsa Vaya.

There are 3 different levels available and we are going to start with the top of the line - Travel Vaya

    Vaya Travel

Vaya Travel is our ultimate travel and touring bike.
Based on our Vaya road touring model, all aspects of the Vaya Travel are designed to make traveling with a bike better. Whether you are flying to Scotland for a multi-week tour, or headed to San Francisco for a long weekend, or just want the ultimate touring machine, Vaya Travel is your essential traveling partner.
We've chosen stainless steel for its fine ride quality, but also because scuffs and scratches are easily buffed out. The paint-free finish is intentionally understated, hopefully making your bike a bit less attention getting when traveling.
Replaceable Salsa decals allow you to change up your style, replace damaged decals, or go stealth mode to attract less attention on the road.
The frame incorporates S&S couplers allowing you to split your frame, break your bike down, and travel more easily. The bike fits into a standard S&S hard or soft case, which should eliminate oversized airline fees.
Alternator dropouts add significant versatility to the Vaya Travel. Run fully geared, or consider a singlespeed setup for some of your trips. Singlespeeds are simple, and easier to breakdown, pack, and re-assemble. If you would happen to damage your drivetrain while off the beaten path, the Alternator's will also help you fashion a temporary fix to keep yourself moving.
Of course, front low rider and rear rack mounts allow you to run full or partial pannier setups as needed for the tour or adventure at hand.

    Vaya 2 & 3

The Vaya is our touring and road adventure bike, designed to handle any ‘road’ surface, from pavement to gravel.
The Classico CroMoly tubeset is carefully selected to provide an excellent ride quality with a full touring load, yet is a pleasure to ride unloaded as well.
Stable geometry keeps the bike from being twitchy, and makes the bike a pleasure to ride while loaded. We designed this bike for a very wide size range of people, thus our two smallest sizes use 26” wheels to provide improved fit, better standover clearance, and to eliminate toe overlap. The larger sizes (54cm and up) use 700c wheels.
A full compliment of braze-ons for fenders, racks, and lowriders, make the Vaya an extremely versatile machine, whether your intent is touring or general road or gravel exploration. Generous tire clearance allows for up to 700c x 42mm size tires without fenders, and 700c x 38mm with fenders. On our 26"-wheeled frame, clearance allows for 26" x 1.9" tires.
Enjoy a long day in the saddle. Do a light tour. Or load your panniers to the hilt for a month of two-wheeled discovery.
    Vaya. Ride any road.

I have the original Salsa Vaya and have done multiple day tours along the Pacific Coast Route, commuted with it, done a 300+ mile Gravel Race in Iowa, and just ridden it around enjoying the awesomeness of the bike itself.  This bike will handle anything you throw at it and if you are in the market for a solid and reliable work bike - you can do no wrong chosing this bike!
