Travel By Bike Thursday - SALSA VAYA TRAVEL

While we await the 2014 line up from all of our manufacturers today we are going to discuss a bike model that has been discussed on the blog before but not in this particular setup - The Salsa Vaya Travel.  Let's see what Salsa has to say about this beautiful and versatile bike:

Vaya Travel is our ultimate travel and touring bike.
Based on our Vaya road touring model, all aspects of the Vaya Travel are designed to make traveling with a bike better. Whether you are flying to Scotland for a multi-week tour, or headed to San Francisco for a long weekend, or just want the ultimate touring machine, Vaya Travel is your essential traveling partner.
We've chosen stainless steel for its fine ride quality, but also because scuffs and scratches are easily buffed out. The paint-free finish is intentionally understated, hopefully making your bike a bit less attention getting when traveling.
Replaceable Salsa decals allow you to change up your style, replace damaged decals, or go stealth mode to attract less attention on the road.
The frame incorporates S&S couplers allowing you to split your frame, break your bike down, and travel more easily. The bike fits into a standard S&S hard or soft case, which should eliminate oversized airline fees.
Alternator dropouts add significant versatility to the Vaya Travel. Run fully geared, or consider a singlespeed setup for some of your trips. Singlespeeds are simple, and easier to breakdown, pack, and re-assemble. If you would happen to damage your drivetrain while off the beaten path, the Alternator's will also help you fashion a temporary fix to keep yourself moving.
Of course, front low rider and rear rack mounts allow you to run full or partial pannier setups as needed for the tour or adventure at hand.
Vaya Travel. Destination anywhere.

Change It Up Wednesday - BIKE INDUSTRY NEWS

Welcome to our Wednesday edition of Bike Industry News.  With Eurobike happening now and Interbike coming up in Mid-September be prepared for a lot of new information coming out and we are going to try and relay as much of that to you as possible.

Today we are going to discuss the Cervelo R5 with some trickledown technology from the Cervelo RCA which is hanging up at Tom's Pro Bike now with a price tag of $16,000.  The R5 will be available in Frameset for $5,000, Dura-Ace 9000 or Red 22 for $7,000, or DI2 for $9,000.

The great thing about this bike is that there is quite a bit of technology in it from the RCA but with a substantial lower price.  There is a weight and stiffness difference because, as it says in the article, of some proprietary issues that Cervelo wants to keep in house in California where the RCA was manufactured instead of bringing them over to Asia where the R5 is manufactured.

The Fuji SST belongs to Craig Lewis and was raced in Colorado at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge this past week.  While this specific bike is not available we can order any of the SST models in for you.  Here are the Technical Specifications of the SST 1.1:

For the Mountain Bikers out there FSA is entering the Hydraulic Disc Brake market this year.

Campagnola has updated it's EPS V2 Power Unit.  This was released at EuroBike and if you want more information on this stop by the shop.

Shimano has issued a recall for Road Racing Hydraulic Disc Brakes.  If you have these on your bike give us a call and we will inform you on how to proceed.  It is "officially" only effective in Europe but authorization is under way for the United States as well.

TT/Triathlon Tuesday - 2014 FELT IA TRIATHLON BIKE

Today we are going to show you a Triathlon specific race bike that is being introduced this year from Felt - The IA Triathlon Bike.

Felt is saying that this bike is for the average age grouper:  The frame was created for riders averaging speeds typically held by amateur triathletes, not the incredible velocities pro time trialists produce. “We are getting to a point where we can’t have a bike perform [at the highest level] in every possible condition,” says Felt aerodynamicist Anton Petrov. For the IA, Petrov and Felt’s R and D team designed around conditions experienced by triathletes. Riding slower means that wind angle is effectively broader—further from head-on—and this set of conditions demands a certain set of design characteristics.

The bike's geometry is:  Like pretty much every other tri bike maker, Felt’s new design is built around an age grouper-appropriate geometry scheme. True to their claim that the IA is created around the needs of amateur triathletes, the frame has a relatively short horizontal reach distance to the aerobar compared to the vertical stack height of the front end. Translated, its fit dimensions aren’t overly demanding. It’s dramatically different from Felt’s ProTour-oriented DA time trial bike. The IA’s stack and reach dimensions nearly mirror the Trek Speed Concept and Cervélo P5. In contrast to those two tri bikes, Felt’s smallest size uses 700c wheels instead of smaller 650c versions often spec’d for very little bikes.

This year it looks like only one model will be released with DI2 components and possibly some future options will be released.  It is not officially on the Felt 2014 released website so we do not have a MSRP for you yet but if you have an interest in a Tri specific race bike stop by the shop and we can find out information for you!

Time to start planning your winter training so stop by and sign up for our Fall or Winter Race Series.  Slots are filling up fast so don't delay!
